All my work has a relationship with the past and its art. In paintings of landscape and interiors I am trying to capture atmosphere through the careful observation of the effects of light, and in so doing to get a sense of time and of weather as well as of place. In still life I look for similar qualities but with an eye to the grandeur that small and everyday things can possess in a pictorial composition. In new schemes of decoration and design in historic settings my main concern is to do something recognizably modern that the building and its history will accommodate naturally. In churches this also requires a proper understanding of theological meaning and liturgical need. 1952
